Question: What is skin?
Answer: Skin is the body's largest organ. It comprises approximately 15% of total body weight and provides protection from germs, radiation from the sun and dehydration. Skin also provides protection for the internal organs.

Skin is comprised of three layers:

  • The epidermis -- the outer layer
  • The dermis -- the middle layer that contains blood vessels, nerves, and sweat glands
  • The subcutaneous - the innermost layer that contains blood vessels and supporting structures.

Question: What causes scars?
Answer: Scars are caused when healthy skin is injured and at least one of its layers is damaged. The healing process begins with bleeding, and is continued as the body forms new tissue fibers to close the wound. Tissues formed by those fibers may form a scar. Some scars are also formed by the presence of diseases and infections.

Question: What is a scar?
Answer: A scar is the mark that is left after a wound or infection has healed. The appearance of a scar can depend on location, age, the severity of the injury, nutritional and genetic status and the presence of infection

Question: What are hypertrophic and keloidal scars?
Answer: These scars are thick, raised and usually darker than normal skin color. Frequently, they are both physically and psychologically painful. Hypertrophic scars rise above the surface of the skin, but stay within the boundaries of the area that was injured. Keloidal scars rise above the skin, but extend beyond the injured area.

Question: What are acne scars?
